Middle-aged men and women are the age group most likely to turn to the internet to find love.
A study has shown those aged between 40 and 69 were the most likely to use on line dating sites, with 36% of people questioned in that age group revealing they had found their current partner on the net.
The results show that almost one in three internet users admitted to have visited dating websites. A survey of 12,000 couples from 18 countries had found that 6% had gone to dating sites in 1997, but, by 2009, five times that number had tried them.
These findings dispel the myth that social networking and on line dating is primarily for the young , with just 23% of 18 to 40 year-olds saying they had started a relationship through the internet.
The popularity of on line dating seems largely down to its accessibility and the fact that people seem comfortable disclosing what appears to be personal details in a 'pseudo-anonymous' on line setting!
